The National Weather Service (NWS) on Monday extended excessive heat advisories to Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi, as well as parts of New Mexico and Arizona.

Meteorological authorities said that more than 55 million people are under heat alert for the wave, which extends into the lower part of the Mississippi River valley with high humidity values.

Last Friday, the NWS in Midland reported a temperature of 119 degrees Fahrenheit (48 degrees Celsius) in the Big Bend area of southwest Texas, which nearly equals the all-time record set in 1994.

For their part, other territories reached their maximum levels. Such is the case in San Angelo, in West Texas, with 114 degrees Fahrenheit (45 degrees Celsius) and the city of Del Rio with 115 degrees Fahrenheit (46 degrees Celsius).

Last week, a 66-year-old postal worker in Dallas and a 14-year-old teenager hiking in Big Bend National Park in Texas died.

The vice president in charge of science of the NGO Climate Central, Andrew Pershing, told international media that this heat wave is "more intense, more widespread and probably also longer" due to the impact of human activities.

The NWS recommended that the population drink plenty of water, stay in air-conditioned rooms, as well as avoid strenuous activities.
