The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, was appointed this Sunday as head of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Tinubu takes over from the President of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, for a 12-month term.

He was elected during the sixty-third regular session of the ECOWAS Summit of Heads of State and Government held this Sunday in the capital of Guinea-Bissau.



In addition to the transfer of functions, at this meeting, the regional bloc discussed the political and security situation, specifically, in the nations of Mali, Guinea-Conakry and Burkina Faso.

These three countries were suspended from the decision-making bodies of the organization, after the seizure of power by the military in 2020, 2021 and 2022, respectively.

The Economic Community of West African States was created in 1975. Its mission is to promote integration in all areas of economic activity, especially industry, transport, telecommunications, energy, agriculture, natural resources, the trade, monetary and financial affairs, as well as social and cultural ones.
