Haiti and the Dominican Republic try to reduce border tension

In order to reduce tension on the common border, the Foreign Ministers of Haiti, Jean Victor Geneus, and the Dominican Republic, Roberto Álvarez, spoke this Wednesday, the Haitian Government reported in a statement.

Both addressed the recent incidents that occurred at the border crossing between said countries where, according to official Dominican sources, a group of Haitians entered the territory of the neighboring country to avoid Army patrols around the fence in that area.

The spokesman for the Dominican Government, Homero Figueroa, indicated that this "action appears to be due to an apparent misunderstanding on the part of Haitian citizens regarding the border limits that separate both countries."



On the other hand, Haitian authorities claim that Dominican soldiers, supported by armored vehicles and a helicopter, had violated their territory, apparently in reaction to what they considered a Haitian incursion into their country.

"Faced with this situation, which has caused strong tension in the area and discontent among the population, the two foreign ministers have agreed to work to calm tensions in order to avoid any escalation, pending a satisfactory solution in accordance with the law." international," indicated the Haitian Government in the document.



Likewise, he reiterated his willingness to continue dialogue and negotiation with the Dominican side and calls for calm and serenity.

The incident occurred amid diplomatic tensions between the countries over the construction of the irrigation canal in Haiti that, in Santo Domingo's opinion, will divert the Masacre River shared by the two nations.

Meanwhile, the Haitian Government, for its part, reaffirms its right to use shared water resources and recently reiterated its willingness to resolve the conflict through diplomatic channels.
