Haiti and the Dominican Republic try to reduce border tension | News

In order to reduce tension on the common border, the Foreign Ministers of Haiti, Jean Victor Geneus, and the Dominican Republic, Roberto Álvarez, spoke this Wednesday, the Haitian Government reported in a statement.

The spokesman for the Dominican Government, Homero Figueroa, indicated that this "action appears to be due to an apparent misunderstanding on the part of Haitian citizens regarding the border limits that separate both countries."

On the other hand, Haitian authorities claim that Dominican soldiers, supported by armored vehicles and a helicopter, had violated their territory, apparently in reaction to what they considered a Haitian incursion into their country.

The incident occurred amid diplomatic tensions between the countries over the construction of the irrigation canal in Haiti that, in Santo Domingo's opinion, will divert the Masacre River shared by the two nations.
