A few hours before the results of the general elections in Guatemala are expected to be made official and after two weeks of uncertainty, the president of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, Irma Palencia, spoke on Tuesday afternoon to hold the political parties responsible for losing the instability in the country.
Guatemalans had not officially known for 16 days who will contest the presidency in the ballot on August 20, after a series of appeals and legal claims interrupted the process and prevented the electoral authority from proclaiming the results that were announced on Monday after voting day.
According to these preliminary results, released by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) itself, the right-wing candidate and former first lady Sandra Torres and the leftist candidate Bernardo Arévalo they would go to the second round and compete for the presidency to succeed the current president, Alejandro Giammattei.
Palencia confirmed that the officialization of results is imminent after the latest requirements are met, which include reports, consolidate data and resolve a last dozen cancellations, of the 345 requested by the parties. It is expected that, in the next few hours, the electoral court will summon the press and make the results of the vote on June 25 official.
