Gold Cup 2023: Mexico challenges Haiti after good sensations in its debut
The Mexican team will face this Thursday against Haiti on the second day of group B of the Gold Cup 2023with the goal of confirming the resurgence that the Tricolor has experienced since the designation of Jaime Lozano as team coach.
Lozano, who led Mexico to the conquest of the Olympic bronze medal in Tokyo 2020, made his debut in command of the Mexican National Team with a 4-0 win against Honduras last Sunday in its start in the Gold Cup.
This resounding victory was unexpected for the fans of El Tri, who did not have high expectations with their team after failing in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and letting go of the Concacaf Nations League title for the second consecutive edition.
Lozano, a young 44-year-old coach, took over the bench to replace the Argentine Diego Coccawho took command of Mexico last February, after Qatar.
Cocca barely added seven games in his management, with only three victories, and developed a football that bet on defensive order, unattractive for fans impatient to see the resurgence of their team.
In a match and with less than a week in office, Lozano quenched the thirst of his fans, who with the defeat of Honduras dream of returning to the times when Mexico was almost unbeatable in CONCACAF.
Defeating Haiti will not be an easy task for Mexico. The Caribbean began the Gold Cup with a 2-1 victory over Qatar, which gave them second place in group B, with three points, the same as El Tri, who are leaders by better goal difference.
frantzdy pierrotMaccabi Haifa striker, scored the goal in added time that certified Haiti's fourth victory in the last three editions of the Gold Cup.
Although in Mexico they lead the historic series against the Haitians, with eight wins and two draws, the Caribbeans, led by the Spanish Gabriel Calderón, gave the Tri a scare the last time they met in the tournament, when in the 2019 Semifinals They demanded until the last minute from Mexico, who threw them out 1-0 in extra time.
Haiti did not make it past the group stage in last year's Gold Cup, but has just won its Concacaf Nations League B group undefeated with five wins and one draw.
The Haitian figures are Pierrot and duckens nazon, CSKA-Sofia striker, his all-time goalscorers in the Gold Cup; Nazon has eight goals and Pierrot seven.
