One male and two female victims were pronounced dead at the scene, and an additional female died at a local hospital. All were shot in the head.
According to authorities, officers received a call at 11:21 p.m. local time Sunday about three people being shot in a "violent assault" in the 15900 block of H Street in the small desert community of Mojave.
"When officers arrived on scene, they located four victims suffering from traumatic assault injuries," the document states. Kern County Sheriff's Office investigators are pursuing leads "quickly" but do not have a suspect or motive for the incident, he said.
The office's public information officer described the investigation as "difficult" due to few eyewitnesses to the events.
This event follows a shooting on Friday night in Cleveland, in the state of Texas, which left five dead. Nor do the authorities have a suspect in what happened in this case.
A database of mass shootings created by The Associated Press, USA Today and Northeastern University says this marks the 19th mass murder in the United States so far this year.
