Stephani Cherkaoui, a former social studies teacher at CMIT Academy High School in Laurel, Maryland, during the 2017-2018 school year, received an email from her credit monitoring service informing her that her account was compromised.

β€œI go online, check it, and it says my name, email address, and Social Security number were found on the dark web and the associated email was my teacher's email address from Prince George's County.” Cherkaoui said. "There is nothing I can do. β€œI just have to wait and hope no one tries to steal my identity.”

He said he had no idea nor received any notification of a Prince George's County Public Schools security breach.

β€œYour information is there and then you wait until something happens,” Cherkaoui said. β€œI'm sure that most of the time they don't catch these cybercriminals who are out there stealing people's identities and scamming them. So I just have to sit back and hope for the best.”

When she contacted school leaders about the issue, they told her in an email obtained by WTOP that her old user account was not one of the 4,500 initially reported to the school system as compromised.
