The decision was made at a meeting of Arab foreign ministers at the league's Cairo headquarters, said the spokesman for its secretary general, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Gamal Roshdy.

"The delegations of the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic will once again participate in the meetings of the Arab League," indicated the text voted unanimously by the ministers in a closed-door meeting at the organization's headquarters in Cairo.

The reconciliation of the Arab countries with Syria, promoted mainly by Saudi Arabia, has been put on the table especially after this country and Iran normalized their relations at the beginning of last March.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri opened the emergency session and stated: "We have a historic responsibility to stand by the side of the Syrian people to help them turn this sad page of their history."

In his speech, Shukri indicated that "the Syrian government has the responsibility to reach a political solution" and that the "military solution is not real."

The League of Arab States or Arab League is an intergovernmental organization of 22 countries in Africa and Western Asia.
