Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation Monday imposing sanctions on Iran and protecting Jewish institutions.
Lawmakers were in Tallahassee earlier this month for a special session, just two months before the start of the Legislature's regular annual session. They passed bills to provide $45 million in grants to protect Jewish institutions and other places that could be targets of hate crimes, as well as legislation to strengthen sanctions already in place against companies that do business with Iranian companies.
DeSantis also signed measures Monday to provide money for hurricane recovery and expand a program to allow students with developmental disabilities to attend private schools with taxpayer money.
DeSantis, who is running for president as a Republican, has campaigned supporting Israel as it prepares an offensive in Gaza following the Oct. 7 Hamas attack that killed more than 1,400 people. The Legislature approved the measures Wednesday just hours before DeSantis participated in a Republican presidential debate in Miami .
