Fire in two nightclubs in Spain leaves at least 13 dead

The number of deaths in fire of a leisure venue in the Spanish city of Murciawhich later spread to two nightclubs annexed buildings, one of them frequented by the Latin community, now totals thirteen, according to regional authorities.

The identification work of the victims, who had gathered for a celebration in the entertainment venue whose roof collapsed inwards, is being carried out by the scientific police.

While investigations continue to clarify what happened, the city council of Murcia has decreed three days of mourning and its mayor, José Ballesta, conveyed his condolences to the family and friends of the victims on behalf of the municipal corporation.

The regional Executive also announced that the flags on public buildings throughout the region will fly at half-mast between tomorrow, Monday and Wednesday.

On his behalf, the regional president, Fernando López Miras, expressed his condolences to family and friends of the victims “in these moments of so much pain” that he says he shares.

“Today is a day of mourning and pain for the region,” he said in a statement before “heartily” thanking the troops who are working during the last hours for their “very important” work.

This fire is the most lethal Registered in Spain in a leisure venue since the tragedy that occurred in 1990 at the “Flying” nightclub in Zaragoza, where 43 people died.
