Finland: Bridge collapse leaves 24 injured, most of them children

At least 24 people, mostly children, were injured by the collapse of a temporary step bridge in the Finnish town of Espoo, on the outskirts of Helsinki.

Until now it has not transcended the possible reasons for this collapse, that the authorities are already investigating.

The collapse, which occurred around 9:30 a.m. (local time), meant for the victims fall from several meters high. Most of the people treated at a local hospital had suffered fractures from fallreports the television channel YLE.

Most of the injured were identified as students of a primary school. The authorities set up a help line to assist the families of these children.

The minors were part of a group of adolescents from 14 and 15 year olds returning from a field trip along with their teachers when the temporary pedestrian bridge collapsed, a doctor from the Helsinki hospital district told a news conference.

Police said the temporary bridge had been built with plywood while construction work was taking place in the area.
