Illinois authorities were on a suspected murder-suicide Thursday after five people, including two children, were discovered dead.

Officers responded to a home in the northwestern suburbs of Buffalo Grove to conduct a welfare check.. When no one answered the door, they forced their way in and discovered five bodies inside the residence, police said.

After conducting a preliminary investigation, authorities believe the violence was “domestic in nature” and that there is no ongoing threat to the community.

Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek identified the victims as 4-year-old Ameila Kislak; Vivian Kisliak, 6 years old; Vera Kisliak, 36; Andre Kisliak, 39; and Lilia Kisliak, 67.

Police also found a dead animal, according to Buffalo Grove Police Chief Brian Budds.

Banek said his office has completed autopsies on four of the victims. All appeared to have died of acute force injuries, he said.

Residents were still baffled by the grisly discovery, many wondering how something so terrible could have happened in the quiet neighborhood.

“I grew up here, so it’s so shocking that this is happening,” said a neighbor.

“It’s something I’m still trying to understand. This is not how it’s supposed to be, especially during the holidays.”

First responders remained at the scene overnight Wednesday and into Thursday morning. The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force is also assisting with the investigation.

Buffalo Grove officials have asked residents to avoid the area while the investigation unfolds.
