Despite the decrease in positive cases for Covid-19 in Europe, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) stressed on Tuesday that the pandemic is not yet over and the countries of the region need to prepare for a new wave.
WHO predicts the end of the Covid-19 pandemic is near
“The data has shown that in recent weeks there has been a reduction in the total number of cases and deaths caused by Covid-19 in Europe,” said the head of the EMA’s Health Threats and Vaccines Strategy, Marco Cavaleri.
However, he referred that “as autumn approaches, we have to prepare for a new wave of infections”, since this scenario has occurred in the last two years and can be repeated.
Cavaleri indicated that some variants of the coronavirus can spread more than others, although he acknowledged that the predominant one in Europe is the omicron BA.5.
“The BA.5 omicron variant is still the dominant variant circulating in Europe,” said the expert, who added that “we still have to stay alert to other variants. For example, BA.4.6 is spreading rapidly in the United States. United States and has already been detected in Europe. In addition, the BA.2.75 is a variant of concern, “he said.
For his part, the medical director of EMA, Steffen Thirstrup, maintained that “what should be clear from Dr. Cavaleri’s presentation is that in Europe we still consider that the pandemic continues.”
According to data provided by Johns Hopkins University, a total of 612,841,202 positives for the Covid-19 disease have been confirmed in the world since the start of the pandemic and 6,529,244 deaths.
