The mayor of New York, Eric Adams, presented this Monday the first trip of electric helicopters in the city as part of an ambitious plan to promote zero-emission air travel.

The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) is seeking an operator to equip the city-owned Downtown Manhattan Heliport with the infrastructure necessary to accommodate electric helicopters.

The aircraft that participated in the demonstration are from the aviation company Joby, which together with Delta Air Lines, seeks to launch its air taxi service in the city, offering trips without carbon emissions and with reduced noise. The company plans to start its commercial service in 2025.

It has not yet been detailed whether Joby will be the company in charge of operating helicopter taxi services from the city facilities. The local government has also not detailed how the costs of modernizing public infrastructure will be distributed to achieve the takeoff and landing of these vehicles.
