Mexico is located in an area geologically close to the Ring of Fire, a chain of tectonic plates that is characterized by intense seismic and volcanic activity.
These plates interact in different ways such as subduction, where one slides under another, or two plates collide causing crustal movements and earthquakes of various magnitudes.
Earthquakes are vibrations in the form of waves that arise from within the earth. Because our planet is covered by a rocky layer known as the lithosphere, with a thickness of up to 100 km, which is fragmented into large portions called tectonic plates.
