Ten people were injured Monday during a drive-by shooting in a central Florida neighborhood, police said.
Lakeland City Police Chief Sam Taylor told a news conference that two of the victims are in critical condition, while the remaining eight suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Lakeland is located about 30 miles (50 kilometers) east of Tampa.
“I've lived here 34 years, and I can tell you that I've never worked at an event where so many people were shot at the same time, ever,” Taylor said.
A group of people were gathered on a residential street when a dark blue sedan drove by. The attackers fired from the vehicle's windows before sped away. Police are looking for the car and the assailants, authorities said.
Taylor said investigators believe it was a targeted attack.
Police found marijuana at the scene of the shooting. Investigators believe drugs were being sold.
Taylor called it a "difficult" neighborhood, noting that police have focused a lot of attention on that area in recent years.
