Doctor dies run over after the theft of his vehicle
A Silver Spring, Maryland, physician who was providing residency services at MedStar Washington was killed by his own vehicle after a thief stole his parked car in northwest DC Tuesday night.
According to Metropolitan Police, the suspect entered the car owned by Dr. Rakesh Patel around 8 pm in the 1800 block of Vernon Street NW near the intersection of 18th Street and Florida Avenue.
The suspect tried to flee the scene in his car and in doing so hit 33-year-old Patel before going on the run. Members of the DC fire and emergency services pronounced him dead at the same place.
“We are heartbroken to learn of the sudden passing of Dr. Rakesh (Rick) Patel,” Medstar said in a statement. “He completed his residency here, completed a fellowship in Infectious Diseases and was currently training as a Critical Care fellow. We will miss Dr. Patel very much.”
Police said shortly before 2 pm Wednesday that they had recovered Rakesh’s stolen Mercedes.
