Through a statement, the entity specified that the deceased are male, three in the state of Veracruz (east), two in Quintana Roo (southeast), two in Sonora (northwest) and one in Oaxaca (south).
The document explains that seven of the individuals died from heat stroke, and the eighth from dehydration. Meanwhile, the General Directorate of Epidemiology has identified some 487 people with conditions associated with extreme temperatures, which means an increase of 72 percent compared to 2022.
The Ministry of Health also detailed that, from June 3 to 10, 69 heat strokes "associated with extreme natural temperatures" have been reported.
For its part, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) has asserted that three of the four heat waves forecast for 2023 have occurred.
The first took place from April 1 to April 10; the second was registered from May 3 to 12, and the third began on June 1 and will run until the 18th or 20th of this month.
A heat wave is considered to be the period of at least three consecutive days with temperatures above average. The phenomenon has placed Mexico as one of the warmest regions in the Western Hemisphere.
