The United Nations (UN) today revealed alarming figures indicating a dramatic threefold increase in the number of migrants killed or missing while trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea during the summer, compared to the same period last year.

According to the UN children's agency Unicef, between the months of June and August, at least 990 people lost their lives or disappeared on the dangerous central Mediterranean route, which connects Africa and Europe. This figure represents a significant increase compared to the 334 victims recorded in the same months of 2022.
