The United Nations (UN) today revealed alarming figures indicating a dramatic threefold increase in the number of migrants killed or missing while trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea during the summer, compared to the same period last year.

According to the UN children's agency Unicef, between the months of June and August, at least 990 people lost their lives or disappeared on the dangerous central Mediterranean route, which connects Africa and Europe. This figure represents a significant increase compared to the 334 victims recorded in the same months of 2022.

The Mediterranean has become a cemetery for children and their future," said Regina De Dominicis, UNICEF regional director for Europe and Central Asia.

Although neither the agency nor the UN provided a breakdown of how many of the dead were children, UNICEF noted that 11,600 unaccompanied minors were among the migrants who attempted to reach Italy by sea between January and September, marking an increase. 60 percent compared to the first nine months of the previous year.
