The President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz Canel, thanked this Monday for the words of solidarity that Pope Francis expressed towards the Cuban people after his traditional Angelus prayer, on the occasion of the passage of Hurricane Ian through the west of that country, which caused the death of three people in the province of Pinar del Río and considerable material losses.

Through his account on the social network Twitter, the Cuban president assured that the words of the Holy Father constitute an encouragement to redouble solidarity actions in order to move towards recovery.
In his message on Sunday, the Supreme Pontiff referred to the human lives lost, the people who were forced to abandon their homes and the damage to the economy left by the meteorological event both in Cuba and in the southern state of Florida, in United States (USA).
“I am close to the people of Cuba and Florida, hit by a violent hurricane. May the Lord welcome the victims, give consolation to hope to those who suffer and sustain the commitment to solidarity,” the pope said during the Sunday ceremony.
Last Tuesday, Hurricane Ian crossed the western end of Cuba following a direction from south to north, with category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson scale (out of a maximum of 5), with an extensive cloudy area that caused intense rainfall, , storm surge and sustained winds of more than 200 kilometers per hour.
Subsequently, the meteorological phenomenon gained in intensity and reached category 4, while heading towards the state of Florida, where the strength of its winds caused serious damage to urban infrastructure, road collapse, flooding and left a balance of more than 90 deaths. , according to local media.
After hitting Florida, Hurricane Ian moved towards the state of South Carolina, where it arrived as a category 1, with weaker winds and rains than those that had hit Florida.
