City of San Diego employees file lawsuit challenging COVID-19 mandate
SAN DIEGO (CNS) — A lawsuit challenging the city of San Diego's COVID-19 mandate (in favor of) city employees has received public support from a group of local police and firefighters.
The lawsuit was described during a news conference as litigation brought in support of hundreds of local first responders and city employees facing possible termination for violating city rules (COVID-19 mandate).
A spokesman for San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria's office declined to comment (on this) and referred questions to the City Attorney's Office, (as it was) on ongoing litigation.
“Direct attack on freedoms”
Amy Bohn, president of Protecting the Educational Rights of Children — or PERK, one of the groups behind the lawsuit, has called the mandate “coercion” and a “direct attack on (city employee) freedoms.” .
Bohn felt that it would have a huge impact on public safety if unvaccinated officers and firefighters were laid off.
According to a San Diego Union-Tribune report from earlier this month, nearly 500 SDPD officers applied for exemptions from the mandate, with most requests based on religious grounds.
The local police union later filed suit alleging that officers were illegally prohibited from recording their waiver-application meetings with city staff.
“This mandate has to end”
SDPD K-9 Officer Jonathan Wiese, who received public acclaim for his efforts to rescue two young children from an overturned vehicle in the waters off Sunset Cliffs in 2020, spoke at the news conference in support of the lawsuit.
Referring to the Sunset Cliffs rescue, Wiese said, "I don't know, and I can't imagine any parent worrying about my vaccination status when that happened?"
Wiese said: “This term has to end. Otherwise, if we don't do it, we will stop being the best city in the United States."
Mayor's call to get vaccinated
Although the case was indicated as being in litigation, in a message posted on his Facebook account on January 27, Mayor Todd Gloria appealed to those who had not yet been vaccinated to prevent COVID-19, clearly expressing his stance in favor of immunization:
“Over a million San Diegans have been given a booster opportunity, but a million more are eligible and haven't done so yet. The booster is highly effective in preventing hospitalization if you contract COVID-19. Please help our health heroes by getting vaccinated and boosting them as soon as possible, ”said the mayor of the city of San Diego.
