China confines the city of Baise due to the rise in Covid-19 cases | News

The authorities of the city of Baise in the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, in southern China, reported on Monday the confinement of said city to stop the rise in infections of Covid-19, and after registering 70 new cases in the last three days.

This city, with an estimated population of close to 3.6 million inhabitants, and located about 100 from the border with Vietnam, detected its first local contagion of the Sars-Cov-2 virus last Friday in a traveler who arrived to participate in the Spring Festival.

The local health authorities detail that in the last 24 hours there have been 37 new infections; of the total of 79 reported by the Asian country due to the expansion of the Omicron variant of the Sars-Cov-2 virus.

The deputy mayor of Baise, Gu Junyan, pointed out when notifying the confinement that “traffic controls will be applied, so in principle, vehicles and people will not be able to enter or leave the city.”

To which he added that the residents of some small rural communities belonging to Baise are also under strict home confinement, while others will be restricted from leaving their respective districts.

China hosts these days the Winter Olympic Games under a bubble format in which athletes and personnel from abroad remain isolated from the local population in Beijing and the other sub-venues.

Data provided by the National Health Commission of China reveal that since the start of the pandemic in the country, 106,419 infected people and 4,636 deaths have been quantified.

For his part, the chief epidemiologist of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Wu Zunyou, said that with more than 3,000 million doses of vaccines administered in the country, enough for the entire population to receive their complete schedule, “the containment of the virus is not that simple, but depends on a series of measures”.

The Chinese government has maintained a rigorous containment policy in this regard, which includes strict closures, massive clinical trials, and contact tracing applications to eradicate outbreaks as quickly as possible.
