China and the United States (U.S.) should promote the return of bilateral ties to a healthy development path and jointly advocate for the full and effective implementation of the Paris Agreement, Chinese Premier Li Qiang said Tuesday during a meeting with the US presidential special envoy for climate, John Kerry.

China urges US to finalize improved relations

The senior official stressed that developed countries must take the initiative in reducing emissions and comply with their financial commitments as soon as possible, while those that are in the process of becoming so must make contributions within their capacity.

Li urged sharing scientific and technological achievements and promoting the global green and low-carbon transition.

He expressed the hope that China and the US will continue to uphold the spirit of cooperation, seek common ground while reserving differences through full communication, explore more pragmatic institutionalized cooperation, and promote the process of multilateral climate governance.

For his part, the member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, in a meeting with the US representative, stated that China is willing to strengthen communication with the US, explore mutually beneficial cooperation, and address climate change together.

On the other hand, he declared that his country hopes that the US will continue with "a rational, pragmatic and proactive policy" towards China and continue "adhering to the one-China principle", and in that sense "handle the Taiwan issue in properly" and "practice mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and cooperation."

For his part, Kerry said the United States hopes to work with China to further improve relations between the two countries and bring benefits to the world, noting that both territories are the world's two largest economies and major carbon emitters.

He affirmed that his nation is willing to properly handle the differences and discrepancies between the two countries and jointly address global challenges such as climate change.
