The Chilean Parliament approved this Wednesday to extend for another fifteen days the militarization of an area in the south of the country. In this region there has been a territorial conflict between the State and the Mapuche community for decades, which has worsened in recent months.

This measure has been in force since October 12, 2021. It was President Sebastián Piñera who asked Parliament to once again renew the "State of Exception", a procedure that has been repeated every two weeks.

The application of this order allows the Armed Forces to collaborate in police operations, which has been strongly criticized by the opposition and indigenous movements that maintain that it only puts more tension on the bitter dispute.

The militarization covers four provinces of the Biobío and La Araucanía regions that the Mapuche indigenous movement claims as the lands of its original peoples. Currently, these lands belong, for the most part, to large agricultural and forestry companies.

The measure will be in force until February 23 and the president-elect, Gabriel Boric, has rejected it on several occasions.
