CAS admits Russia's appeal against IOC suspension
The Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) confirmed that it has received the appeal from Russian Olympic Committee (COR) against the decision taken by the IOC on October 12 to suspend him with immediate effect, for incorporate Ukrainian regions and violate the Olympic Charter.
The COR requests that annul the decision of the IOC Executive Board and may it be reinstated as national olympic committee recognized by the IOC, “benefiting from all the rights and prerogatives granted by the Olympic Charter.”
The CAS explained that the procedure has already begun and that it is at the moment of exchange of written documentation between the parties, together with the constitution of the panel of arbitrators that will resolve the case, after celebrating a hearing for which there is still no specific date.
The panel's decision will be final and bindingwith the exception of the right of the parties to file an appeal before the Swiss Federal Court within a period of 30 days, recalled the TAS.
The IOC Executive Commission suspended the COR during their last meeting in the Indian city of Bombay, since he understands that the unilateral decision adopted by the Russian Olympic Committee on October 5, 2023 to include among its members regional sports organizations that are under the authority of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Ukraine (namely Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia) “constitutes a violation of the Olympic Charter.”
