La candidata presidencial de Guatemala, Sandra Torres, firmó la víspera un pacto con una organización de militares retirados para obtener así su apoyo en la segunda vuelta electoral, a celebrarse este domingo en el país centroamericano.

Según el acuerdo, Torres se comprometió con la Asociación de Veteranos Militares de Guatemala (Avemilgua) a incrementar el bono económico para los exintegrantes de las fuerzas armadas.
Además, de ganar la presidencia, la ex primera dama fortalecería el Centro Médico Militar e incrementaría el techo presupuestario, con lo que se podría contratar más recursos humanos y equipar el hospital; así como trabajar para mejorar el Instituto de Previsión Militar (IPM).
En cambio, la integrante de la Unidad Nacional de la Esperanza (UNE) les pidió a los exmilitares que convenzan a sus comunidades y familias para que voten por ella y así "defender al país de la agenda extranjera y a favor" de la diversidad sexual que, de acuerdo con Torres, promueve su rival Bernardo Arévalo De León, del Movimiento Semilla.
Durante un acto realizado en el extremo norte de la ciudad de Guatemala (capital), la candidata presidencial aseguró que el encuentro resulta una muestra de la apertura de la UNE: “Somos un partido político incluyente, hemos dejado nuestras banderas políticas para recibir el apoyo de este tipo de organizaciones”.
La entidad militar que acordó su apoyo a Sandra Torres fue fundada por uniformados que prestaron servicio durante el conflicto armado interno de Guatemala (1960-1996). Algunos de sus miembros han sido sindicados por delitos de lesa humanidad y corrupción.
Representante de la continuidad del sistema político impulsado por el presidente Alejandro Giammattei, Torres busca este domingo la presidencia por tercera vez consecutiva; en esta ocasión, frente al candidato Arévalo De León, quien, como principal promesa electoral, ha asegurado que erradicará, precisamente, la corrupción.
