Bus crash leaves 1 dead, several injured

A college student was killed and more than a dozen other passengers, as well as the driver, were injured when the bus they were returning from a hockey game collided with a tree in suburban Boston, authorities said.

Preliminary investigation suggests the vehicle was returning to Brandeis University after the Northeastern University game in Boston when it crashed at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday in Waltham, Middlesex Attorney General Marian said in a statement. Ryan, and Waltham Police Chief Kevin O’Connell.

A student died at the scene. The university identified her Sunday night as 25-year-old Vanessa Mark.

“Although Vanessa was currently on leave, she lived in Waltham and was an active and loved member of the Brandeis community,” school president Ron Liebowitz said in a statement posted on the university’s website. “We have been in contact with Vanessa’s family and will continue to be in contact with them in the coming days, and will keep them updated on how we will honor Vanessa’s memory.”

The university, which has about 5,500 students, canceled classes for Monday and Tuesday, according to a statement from school spokeswoman Julie Jette.

“This will allow some students to return to family and friends sooner than the normal holiday schedule would have allowed,” the statement said.

The university has made bereavement counselors available at the university’s therapy center, who will remain available to students who remain on campus over the Thanksgiving holiday.

The remaining 26 passengers and the driver “sustained injuries of varying severity” and were taken to area hospitals, authorities said. In a statement, Brandeis said nearly all have been released.

No names have been released and so far no one has been charged.

Videos and photos taken from the scene showed a bus with severe damage to the front end and virtually all the windows broken. Debris was scattered at the scene several hours after the accident.

Police are investigating the incident, and have asked anyone who has seen anything to contact them.
