The sinking of the boat sold as scrap in 2022 was carried out 350 kilometers from the Brazilian coast in an area with an approximate depth of 5,000 meters after being authorized by the federal Court.

According to the Navy, the company, which acquired the vessel to disassemble it and make it scrap, never obtained authorization from a port, after it did not implement the pertinent security measures.
According to the Attorney General's Office, the aircraft carrier, which was formerly the largest military ship in Brazil, was carrying 9.6 tons of asbestos, a highly toxic and carcinogenic component, as well as 644 tons of paint, among other materials.
The 266-meter-long “Sao Pablo”, formerly called “Foch”, was built in France in 1963 and sold to Brazil in 2001 for $12 million. However, in 2017 it was deactivated due to its poor functionality.
Subsequently, the carrier was sold to a Turkish shipyard specializing in ship dismantling. However, the vessel never arrived at the Ottoman port due to the refusal of the authorities of that country.
