Tinubu was sworn in as the new president before the head of the Supreme Court, Kayode Ariwoola, in a ceremony held in Abuja (capital), where Kashim Shettima has also been sworn in as vice president.
The former governor of the city of Lagos (former capital), had presented himself as a candidate for the governmental Congress of All Progressives (APC), the same as Buhari, and obtained nearly 8.8 million votes, ahead of Atiku Abubakar, of the Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labor Party.

Tinubu has defended that he prevailed in "fair and credible" elections and has stressed that "this is not the time for acrimony and recrimination", in response to complaints from various opposition candidates about irregularities in the elections. Abubakar and Obi even went so far as to file appeals in court to try to annul the electoral results.
The recently sworn president will replace Buhari, who could not present himself as a candidate; as he has already served the term limit set by the Nigerian Constitution.
The African country is facing an economic situation marked by inflation and an Islamist insurgency in the northeast, as well as the proliferation of armed criminal gangs that ravage, loot, massacre and kidnap civilians, together with administrative corruption that has affected to various governments.
