US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday promised a senior Ukrainian official his country's strong support, including help to get through the winter, amid fears of a new wave of Russian attacks on infrastructure in Kiev.
Blinken met with Andrii Yermak, senior aide to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, during a brief stop in Washington for the top US diplomat, between his trips to the Middle East crisis and the Asia Economic Cooperation Forum summit. -Pacific (APEC) in San Francisco.
Despite the new focus on the Middle East, President Joe Biden has promised to maintain tens of billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine to combat Russian invaders, although he faces skepticism from sectors of the opposition Republican Party.
"In all of our conversations with the Ukrainian government we made it clear that we will remain by their side, that we will continue to support them," State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters.
Blinken spoke with Yermak about the “steps we can take together with Ukraine to strengthen its infrastructure in the coming winter,” Miller added.
Biden has tried to get Congress to approve a $61 billion funding request, with $14 billion for Israel, but Republicans gave the green light only to the portion for Israel.
