Biden vows to continue fighting for abortion rights
The president of United States, Joe Bidencommemorated this Friday the 50th anniversary of the legalization of abortion in the country with the promise to continue fighting to defend this right, revoked last June by the Supreme Court.
“My Administration remains steadfast in its commitment to defend reproductive rights and continue our nation's progress toward equality for all,” the president said in a proclamation to commemorate, on January 22, the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling. "Roe vs. Wade" by which abortion was declared legal in the US.
Biden affirmed that on that same day in 1973 the highest US judicial instance protected with its ruling, which received seven votes in favor and two against, "the constitutional right of women to choose."
“This case reaffirmed basic principles of equality, reinforced the fundamental right to privacy, and argued that the women of this country could control their own destiny, making deeply personal decisions free from political interference,” she added.
However, last June the Supreme Court, which currently has a large conservative majority, revoked that ruling, eliminating the protection of that right at the federal level and leaving abortion policies in the hands of each state.
Biden stressed that with this ruling the Supreme Court "opened the door" for other fundamental freedoms such as access to contraceptives or "the right to marry whoever one loves" to be settled in the courts in the future.
And he stressed that the only way to "truly" guarantee the right to choose is for Congress to inscribe it in the Constitution.
Until then, the president assured that he will continue to use his "executive authority to protect women and families from harm" after the reversal of the "Roe v. Wade" ruling.
