US President Joe Biden underwent a root canal after suffering dental pain, an intervention that left him out of activity for at least a couple of public events on Monday.
Biden's personal physician, Kevin O'Connor, said in a memo released by the White House that Biden reported pain in his lower right premolar on Sunday. The president underwent a first root canal that day and "tolerated the procedure well" with no complications, O'Connor said.
On Monday morning, Biden had “more discomfort” in his mouth, which O'Connor said was to be expected. An endodontic team from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center was completing Biden's root canal at the White House.
The White House said Biden was not put under anesthesia for the procedure.
Biden was scheduled to attend a College Athlete Day event on the South Lawn of the White House, which hosts the 2022-2023 NCAA multi-sport champions of the men's and women's season. Vice President Kamala Harris attended in her place, the White House said.
Biden also rescheduled a planned meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg for Tuesday while he recovers from the intervention. The White House has not said whether Biden will be well enough to host a heads of mission reception at the White House on Monday night.
