President Joe Biden responded Monday with an insult to a Fox News reporter who asked him a question about inflation.
The president was in the East Room of the White House for a meeting with his Competition Council, which focuses on changing regulations and enforcing laws to help consumers deal with high prices. The reporters present shouted several questions after the president's remarks.
Fox News reporter Peter Doocy asked Biden about inflation, which is at its highest in nearly 40 years and has hurt the president's approval ratings. The network Doocy works for has been unremittingly critical of the Biden administration.
Doocy asked, "Do you think inflation is a political handicap heading into the midterm elections?"
Biden responded sarcastically: "It's a great asset, plus inflation." Then he shook his head and added, "What a stupid son of a bitch."
His comments were captured on video and by the microphone that was in front of the president. Doocy took it with humor and in his subsequent appearance on his network he joked: "No one has verified his words yet and said that it is not true."
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The White House has repeatedly insisted that it is focused on curbing inflation, and Biden has redirected his entire economic agenda around this issue.
