Biden announces first drugs for price negotiation

The Joe Biden administration will include the blood thinner Eliquis, the diabetes remedy Jardiance and eight other drugs in the first Medicare price negotiations to try to reduce health care costs for recipients of the government assistance program medical for the elderly.

The government on Tuesday released a list of 10 prescription drugs whose prices it will negotiate directly with the manufacturer. The intent is to lower costs for many patients, but it faces lawsuits from drugmakers and fierce criticism from Republican lawmakers, and it will be years before consumers notice any cuts.

The effort is a central aspect of Biden's re-election campaign, who is trying to convince Americans that he deserves a second term for his efforts to cut prices amid inflation. But the effects of the negotiations, like many of Biden's actions, take his time, and the challenge for him is to convince people to be patient.

“For many Americans, the price of a remedy makes the difference between life and death, dignity and dependency, hope and fear,” Biden said in a statement. "That's why we'll keep fighting to lower health care prices, and we won't give up until the job is done."

Biden plans to deliver a speech on health care costs from the White House in the coming hours. She will be joined by Vice President Kamala Harris.
