Benzema will not appeal his blackmail conviction of a sexual video and will accept his sentence
Karim Benzema, Real Madrid striker and French international, changed his mind and will not appeal the year in jail exempt from serving time, to which he had been sentenced in October 2021 for complicity in the blackmail in 2015 with a sexual video of his former teammate Mathieu Valbuena.
This was confirmed to “L’Equipe” by Benzema’s lawyer, Hugues Vigier, alleging that his client is “completely exhausted” from this process which has been dragging on for six years. The footballer had announced last October his desire to appeal the court decision and was going to be summoned before the judges at the end of June.
“Karim Benzema will always claim his innocence in this affair and has never wanted to participate in a blackmail operation against Mathieu Valbuena”, toadded the lawyer, who confirmed “the deep feeling of injustice” that the merengue player feels.
By accepting this sentence, the footballer no longer has a clean criminal record and, in the event of committing a new infraction punished with jail, that year it would become effective.
Benzema, 34, was also fined 75,000 euros and will compensate Valbuena with 80,000 euros, to whom the court recognized high non-pecuniary damage, since that case affected him personally, in his relations with his wife, and professionally, since he never again wore the “bleu” of the national team.
Benzema was removed from the France team for several years due to his court case with Valbuena. Even the Real Madrid striker missed the 2018 Russia World Cup with the French team that won the competition.
Since 2020, Benzema was again taken into account by his country and was part of the team that reached the quarterfinals of Euro 2020 and will now be in the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
The Frenchman had been harshly criticized for his participation with Real Madrid during the alleged extortion case. He is now one of the biggest candidates to win the Golden Ball after a fantastic season in La Liga and the Champions League.
