Baby dies from severe COVID-19 infection in Qatar
In a rare case, a three week old baby died in qatar by a “serious infection” caused by the covid-19, the Ministry of Health reported on Sunday.
"A three-week-old baby has sadly passed away from a serious infection due to covid-19," the statement said.
The baby had no other health problems or known hereditary diseases, it added.
He is the second child to die from the disease in Qatar since the start of the pandemic.
Mortality due to the coronavirus is very limited among children, but health authorities in several countries have registered more cases of infection among them since the spread of the Omicron variant.
"There are more children infected in this wave and they require more medical attention," said the same source.
The daily number of infections in Qatar has risen to nearly 4,000 in recent days, a 20-fold increase from the figures announced in mid-December.
At the end of December, the main public hospital group in the country suspended the days off for all its medical and administrative staff working with covid-19 patients, due to the increase in cases of infection.
With 2.6 million inhabitants, Qatar has registered almost 300,000 cases, of which some 600 have been fatal.
