According to the police district chief, Chandal Kohli, the bus left the road and rolled into a deep rock.
He started the journey from the city of Amritsar, in the northern state of Punjab, and was heading to one of the most popular Hindu shrines in the country, dedicated to a deity, Vaishno Devi.
Kohli confirmed that eight of the passengers died on the spot and two at the hospital. Rescuers and residents of the area were at the scene helping the victims.
Kashmiri police officer Dilbag Singh said that while authorities have not determined the cause behind the accident, "it appears that the driver had fallen asleep" after spending the whole night behind the wheel.
Traffic accidents in India are frequent due to the poor condition of the roads, the precarious conditions of some vehicles and the general lack of respect for traffic regulations.
