One person has died and another is in critical condition after a fire broke out early Saturday at an apartment tower in a Washington, DC suburb, the Washington Post and other local media reported.

The fire in downtown Silver Spring caused more than a dozen people, including three firefighters, to be taken to the hospital and more than 400 residents to be evacuated, the Post reported.

Authorities told the newspaper that the fire broke out in an apartment on the seventh floor of Arrive, a 15-story building, and estimated damage at $2 million.

Vic Washington, who lives on the third floor, told the Post that he heard two explosions around 6 a.m.

“I was definitely surprised,” he said. “The alarms were ringing. It was very traumatic."

Montgomery County Fire Chief Scott E. Goldstein said authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.

Godstein added that authorities are aware of the reports of loud explosions and believe they may be related to the aerosol cans that were in the apartment. He said the fire was contained to an apartment on the seventh floor.
