Anthony Fauci, US chief epidemiologist, tests positive for COVID


Dr. Anthony Fauci, the main face of the response to the pandemic in the United States during two administrations of the White House, tested positive in a diagnostic test for coronavirus.

Fauci, 81, who is fully vaccinated and has received two booster shots, is experiencing mild symptoms of COVID, according to a statement Wednesday from the National Institutes of Health.

Fauci had been scheduled to appear before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee on Thursday to provide an update on the federal response to the pandemic.

“Dr. Fauci will self-isolate and continue to work from home,” the statement said. “Dr. Fauci will follow the COVID guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the medical advice of your doctor and will return when you have a negative test.

The epidemiologist has not recently been in direct contact with US President Joe Biden, add statement.

Fauci has become the most popular face of the pandemic in the United States with numerous appearances on radio and television programs to answer questions and try to combat the misinformation circulating about COVID.

Fauci has been a White House adviser for seven presidencies, from Ronald Reagan to Joe Biden. and during the pandemic he was a member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force.

Since 1984 he has chaired the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIH) of the United States and is positioned as one of the most prestigious doctors worldwide.
