Another child under the age of 10 dies from COVID
A boy under the age of 10 has died after contracting the coronavirus in South Dakota, becoming the second victim of that age range in the state, health authorities reported Tuesday.
The state Department of Health said the boy was from Minnehaha County, which includes the city of Sioux Falls.
Department spokesman Daniel Bucheli said in an email to the Argus Leader newspaper that COVID-19 was “the underlying factor.” Bucheli said no further information was available.
The first death was that of an infant under the age of one from Pennington County.
More than 12,892 children under the age of 10 have tested positive for the virus since the pandemic began in March 2020.
On Tuesday, the state confirmed 2,265 new and unconfirmed cases, as active cases hit a record high for the fifth time.
The total number of deaths from the virus stands at 2,560 in the state, although health authorities have noted that deaths can take several days to appear after they are reported.
All but one South Dakota county is classified as having high community spread of the disease, according to the health department. Jones County is classified as having low community spread.
