The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, criticized the governor of Texas, Republican Greg Abbott, for having hindered the flow of trade with additional inspections of trucks at the border, and attributed it to his electoral interests.
“It will continue to happen because elections are cominginstead of thinking, I say this respectfully, about how to solve the problem of inflation, they are already involved in politicseven violating international law,” the president said in his morning conference.
López Obrador referred to the inspections that Abbott established last week, who is seeking re-election in November, after the announcement by Democratic President Joe Biden to eliminate the so-called Title 42, a rule by Donald Trump to immediately deport migrants on the grounds of the pandemic.
The Texan governor revoked the inspections on Friday, but the Government of Mexico did not intervene in the negotiations, which fell to the border governors of Nuevo León, Chihuahua, Coahuila and Tamaulipas, who had to promise that they will control the migratory flow.
The president of Mexico justified that he did not get involved because the actions of Texas are “totally contrary to free trade” and “states do not have the power to make agreements with a foreign country.”
“I would tell them that they are like chicanadas (traps) on the part of the Texas Governmentlegally they can do it, but that proceeding is very vile”, he indicated.
“We are not going to fall into any provocation of anything, and it is good that it has already been resolved and I hope that they do not act like this, it does not help them,” he added.
The president commented “that the governor of Texas aspires to be the candidate of the republican party and then they think that with that they are going to gain sympathy, although they harm ”.
He denounced that “there is a lot of irrationality” and that the purpose of the president of Texas “is to create conflicts.”
“With all due respect, not even a municipal agent does that. How is an aspiring president of the great nation that is the United States going to act like this? That they are not going to get angry anymore, that they do not lose their sense of humor, ”he said.
Texas and Mexico are important trading partners and, in 2020 alone, they exchanged goods and services valued at 177.8 billion dollars, of which approximately 89.000 million were exports from Mexico to the US and 88.7 billion were imports from the US. ., according to data from the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
