AMLO congratulates Lula after beating Bolsonaro in the first electoral round in Brazil

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador sent a message of congratulations to the former president of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvaafter having surpassed the current president Jair Bolsonaro in the first electoral round.

“Congratulations, brother and companion Lula. The people of Brazil demonstrated once again their democratic vocation and, especially, his inclination for equality and justice”, he wrote in a message from Twitter.

With 97.07 percent of the votes counted, Lula da Silva, leader of the Workers' Party, positioned himself as the winner of the first round, by getting the 47.88 percent of the votes (more than 54.8 million votes).

While the current outgoing president and leader of the Liberal Party, Bolsonaro, obtained 43.68 percent (more than 49.7 million votes), according to data released by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal.

The difference between the two main candidates drops to just over four percentage points, as indicated by the count of practically all the ballot boxes.

Despite this, both stayed close to the 50 percent needed to avoid the second round, which It will take place on October 30.

Simone Thebet, in third place, got 4.22 percent of the vote. For its part, Cyrus Gomesin fourth place, obtained 3.06 percent.

The president of Argentina, Alberto Fernandez, also joined in congratulating Lula da Silva. "I congratulate my dear Lula for his victory in the first round and I extend my sincere respect to the people of Brazil for their deep democratic expression," he wrote on Twitter.

Also the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petrosent a congratulations to the candidate of the Workers' Party.

“I congratulate Lula for his victory in the first round. I congratulate the Brazilian people for their enormous electoral participation”, the president pointed out.
