Amid tensions over the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the US and Colombia carry out naval exercises in the Caribbean; Venezuela describes them as “imperialist ostentation”
Colombia and the United States began this Monday military exercises in the Caribbean Seawhich for the first time include a nuclear submarine, near the coast of Venezuela, Russia's ally in Latin America.
The head of the Colombian Navy, Diego Molano, assured that the maneuvers seek to strengthen the fight against drug trafficking and "national sovereignty."
For Venezuela, in the voice of Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino, the exercises are a “imperialist ostentation.
The action "ratifies the mutual trust of that alliance that the United States has with Colombia," said Molano.
Bogotá questioned a few weeks ago an alleged attempt to russian interference on the border with Venezuela, with support and military advice to the troops of the Nicolás Maduro regime. The Moscow embassy rejected the accusations.
Molano did not detail how long the rehearsal maneuvers in the Caribbean will last, nor the number of US troops involved.
Colombia is the only Latin American country qualified as a strategic partner of NATO, the alliance of Western powers that opposes the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
"Our Navy is preparing itself more and more to guarantee our national sovereignty," concluded Molano, accompanied by the commander of the Armed Forces, General Luis Fernando Navarro.
