Given the growing limitations on abortion in the United States, many women have had to resort to alternative guidance, such as the one provided by a citizen number created specifically for this purpose.
The 'Miscarriage and Pregnancy Termination Hotline' is a project staffed by 70 volunteer medical professionals who provide advice and guidance to American women who do not wish to continue their pregnancy.
A large percentage of the women who call perform the procedures at home, as it is illegal in their states. Linda Prine, one of the project's founders, started the line in 2019, when restrictions on reproductive rights tightened under Donald Trump. Since the repeal of abortion last year, calls have skyrocketed.
To date, Linda and her colleagues see about 13 cases over the phone and a similar number of patients who contact them by text message. The most frequently asked questions are where to find pills to terminate a pregnancy and doubts about their effectiveness, as well as guidance on persistent bleeding and other symptoms. The identity of the people on the other end of the phone is kept anonymous.
