Las autoridades de Wintzenheim, en el noreste de Francia, confirmaron la muerte de al menos 11 personas el miércoles a causa de un incendio desatado en una residencia vacacional para personas discapacitadas.

Según Nathalie Kielwasser, fiscal adjunta de la ciudad de Colmar, solo las personas que dormían en la planta baja del edificio de dos pisos consiguieron escapar, y cinco de las que vivían en el primer piso también lograron salir. En total, fueron 17 las personas evacuadas.

La funcionaria afirmó que "probablemente" el incendio fue causado por una llama de combustión lenta y que debieron transcurrir varias horas antes de que la estructura de madera quedara devorada por las llamas.



El incendio ocurrió alrededor de las 06:30 de la mañana, hora local, y fue controlado rápidamente por las fuerzas de emergencia y de protección contra incendios que acudieron rápidamente al lugar.

Trascendió asimismo que el edificio siniestrado albergaba a un grupo de vacacionistas discapacitados procedentes de la ciudad francesa de Nancy.
