Alexandria City appoints interim superintendent

The Alexandria City School Board on Friday named Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt as interim superintendent of Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS). She will exercise the position from September 1.

Kay-Wyatt is currently the chief of human resources for ACPS, having joined the school division in July 2021. She is the second African-American interim superintendent at ACPS.

Kay-Wyatt will lead the school division as successor to current Superintendent Dr. Gregory C. Hutchings, Jr., who is in office until Aug. 31.

Kay-Wyatt’s contract runs through June 30, 2023 or until a permanent superintendent is hired.

This will allow for some transition time in August and help ensure a smooth start to the new school year on August 22, 2022.

Dr. Kay-Wyatt holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Mary Washington College, a master’s degree in education from Old Dominion University, a master’s degree in education in educational leadership from the University of Mary Washington, and a doctorate in educational leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Her awards and recognitions include Jaycees Educator of the Year and James Monroe High School Teacher of the Year.

Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) serves more than 15,400 students who come from more than 110 countries and speak 121 languages.
