About 16,000 borrowers in Washington are eligible for student debt forgiveness
According to data published by the United States Department of Education approximately about 16,000 borrowers in Washington state are eligible for debt forgiveness of student loans.
In a press release it was detailed that âthe US Department of Education released state-by-state data today on the number of borrowers who are eligible for automatic loan relief under Pay-Based arrangements implemented by the Biden-Harris Administration. to ensure that all borrowers have an accurate count of the number of monthly payments that qualify for forgiveness," he said.
In this sense, Washington borrowers will have more than $777 million in debt forgiven, This amount is part of the $39 billion dollars that will be provided to pay off the student debt of some 804,000 borrowers, as announced by President Joe Biden.
Washington University law professor Hugh Spitzer noted that âthis time, they are forgiving the loans of students who were promised forgiveness after a certain number of years, but the US government and loan servicing companies got it wrong and didn't keep good records. All of these students deserve to have their loan balances forgiven,â he said.
Therefore, Spitzer stressed that this forgiveness agreement has a much stronger legal foundation that supports low-income borrowers. âThis is much less important than the last student loan forgiveness package,â he explained.
In this sense, at least four plans were enabled to make the payments of low-income borrowers more affordable. This plan is given after in June the US Supreme Court ruled against a loan forgiveness plan broader by the Biden administration.
