A large fog bank that engulfed a highway caused a pileup of at least 158 vehicles with a death toll of seven in the southern US state of Louisiana, authorities said Monday.
The so-called "super fog," which U.S. media reported was caused by a combination of fire smoke and dense fog, caused a massive pileup on Interstate 55, about 30 miles from New Orleans, New Orleans state police said. Louisiana in a statement.
Photos released by police showed both lanes of a highway bridge where the accident occurred blocked by crashed vehicles, including dozens burned.
A fire broke out on the highway, according to police.
More than 25 people were taken to the hospital, not counting "many victims (who) sought medical assistance on their own."
