The most recent incident of prison violence in Ecuador left at least 15 dead and more than 20 injured in the Cotopaxi prison in Latancunga. The authorities are still working to recover the bodies after the confrontation between prisoners that occurred on Monday.

The country's prison system operates under an overcrowding of 11.3%, with 33,500 inmates. Riots are common in the Latin American country. Just last July, 13 prisoners died in Santo Domingo, inside a prison where another 43 people had already died in another incident that took place two months earlier. Last year, 316 prisoners lost their lives behind bars, in a systematic abandonment that has been denounced by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.
