A magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck part of Northern California between the state capital and the San Francisco Bay region on Wednesday, triggering automatic seismic alerts.
The 9:29 a.m. earthquake was centered in the agricultural area of Isleton, about 32 miles (52 kilometers) southwest of Sacramento, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The area is largely occupied by the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta.
Sacramento County Office of Emergency Services spokeswoman Kim Nava said there were no immediate reports of damage from the earthquake. In particular, Nava said there were no reports of damage to the area's extensive levees that protect farmland.
The tremor triggered a system warning ShakeAlert from the West Coast, which detects the onset of an earthquake and sends alerts to smartphones in areas expected to experience tremors.
In Sacramento, a ShakeAlert came before the shaking began. The blinds swung in The Associated Press office in Sacramento, on the ninth floor of a high-rise building.
The earthquake was initially estimated to have a magnitude of 5.7, but was downgraded.
The Isleton shake occurred the day after the 34th anniversary of the destructive Loma Prieta earthquake of October 17, 1989 that shook the San Francisco Bay region, and one day before the annual ShakeOut state earthquake drill in California .
